Eklingji Temple in Udaipur, (Rajasthan Devdarshan)

The Eklingji Temple, located about 22 kilometers from Udaipur in the small town of Kailashpuri, is one of the most revered and ancient temples in Rajasthan. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is not only a spiritual center but also a symbol of the devotion of the Mewar rulers, who considered Eklingji their ruling deity.

The temple was originally built in 734 AD by Bappa Rawal, the founder of the Mewar dynasty. Over the centuries, it has undergone several renovations, yet it retains its historical and architectural charm. The temple complex is a masterpiece of intricate craftsmanship and features a blend of Rajputana and Maru-Gurjara architectural styles.

The main sanctum houses a four-faced black marble Shiva Lingam, representing Lord Shiva as the creator, preserver, and destroyer of the universe. The lingam is surrounded by a silver snake, and the sanctum also includes idols of Nandi, Shiva’s bull, and other deities. The temple complex comprises 108 smaller shrines dedicated to various gods and goddesses, making it a vibrant spiritual hub.

Eklingji Temple is known for its beautifully sculpted pillars, exquisitely carved ceilings, and ornate walls that depict stories from Hindu mythology. The temple is particularly enchanting during the evening aarti (ritual worship), when devotees gather to offer prayers amidst the soothing sound of bells and chants.

The temple holds great historical and cultural significance. The rulers of Mewar considered themselves as servants of Eklingji and ruled as representatives of the deity, reinforcing the temple’s role in the region’s history.

Surrounded by lush greenery and serene water bodies, the Eklingji Temple offers a tranquil retreat for devotees and visitors. It attracts a large number of pilgrims, especially on Mondays, which are considered auspicious for Lord Shiva.

Whether you are a spiritual seeker, a history enthusiast, or an admirer of ancient architecture, a visit to Eklingji Temple provides a deeply enriching experience and a glimpse into the rich heritage of Udaipur and Rajasthan.
